The Clerk’s office is the general information center for the Town of Keene. The Town Clerk is responsible for the recording and upkeep of all the town’s records.

Hours in the Office:

Tuesday 4:30-7:00 P.M

Thursday 7:30A.M-12:00 P.M

Registrar Services

Certified copies of birth, death and marriage certificates are available for $10.00 fee per copy. The following are links to printable request forms (PDF format).

Genealogy copies are available (Uncertified) of the following:

Birth Certificates, if on file for at least 75 years and the persons whose name is on the birth certificate is known to be deceased.

Death Certificates, if on file for at least 50 years.

Marriage Certificates, if on file for at least 50 years and the couple are both known to be deceased.

Marriage License

A couple who plans to be married in New York state must apply in person for a marriage license. The application for a license must be signed by both parties in the presence of the clerk. A representative cannot apply for the license on behalf of the couple.

When should you apply to get your license?

Marriage licenses are issued right away but the ceremony cannot take place until 24 hours after application. A license is valid for 60 days, beginning the day it is issued.

How much does a license cost?

A marriage license costs $40.00 which may be paid by check or cash. Additional certificates of marriage may be obtained for $10.00 a copy.

What do I need to Bring ?

A birth certificate, baptismal record, or naturalization record and a driver’s license, passport, employment ID, or immigration record must be provided to obtain a marriage license. Divorce papers or death certificates are also needed if applicable.

Hunting and fishing licenses are available for sale in the Town Clerk’s office.

Dog License and Registration

In the Town of Keene all Dogs must be registered and licensed with the Town Clerk.

A current rabies vaccination certificate is required.

Licenses must be renewed annually.

$6.00 for spayed/neutered

$13 for unaltered dogs

You will need:

  1. Proof from the veterinarian of spayed or neutered, unless proof is already on file.
  2. Proof of rabies vaccination signed by a licensed veterinarian.
  3. Check or cash for the appropriate license fee.

Renewals will be mailed to the owner address on file.

Transfer Station Punch Cards

Punch cards are available from the Town Clerk and also the Keene Public Library, the Hardware store and the Valley Grocery. Tickets are NOT available for purchase at the Transfer Station.

$1.00 (GREEN TICKETS) 10 punches at .10 cents each

$2.00 (YELLOW TICKETS) 20 punches at .10 cents each

$5.00 (ORANGE TICKETS) 10 punches at .50 cents each

$10.00 (RED TICKETS) 10 punches at $1.00 each

$18.00 (BLUE TICKETS) 18 punches at $1.00 each

Handicap vehicle tags are available from the Town Clerk.

Real Property Tax Collection for the Town of Keene

Tax Collector, Anna M Whitney

Real Property Taxes are collected by the tax collector.

Tax bills are mailed out at the end of December each year.

Collection of taxes runs from January 1st to April 30th.

Tax bills are sent to the address that is on file with Essex County. If you need to change your address on file with the county please fill out the Change of address form.

Application for Change of Address

Payments are due in full on or before the January 31st.

4 payment plans are available which include interest. Please call the Tax collector at 518-576-4444 or email at townclerk@townofkeeneny.gov for more information. Four pay plans must be set up before the end of January. These are pre-set amounts dictated by Essex county. They must be paid exactly.
